Five Things I Learned from Gretchen Rubin's "The Happiness Project"

About a month ago I read the book The Happiness Project.

This book chronicles the author's one year quest to find happiness in her own, everyday life. She didn't sell all of her belongings, move to Africa, or buy a one way ticket to Iceland -- she found small ways to enrich her current life, in order to bring about more happiness. Every month she focused on a different area of her life and completed a few goals within each area.

If you haven't noticed, I am kind of on some strange minimalist kick, with the major purge of my closet, and my capsule wardrobe, so this book was right up my alley.

I really resonated with the author, as Gretchen Rubin was an attorney (prior to quitting her big firm job to pursue writing full time), is a Type A overachiever, and struggled with understanding what made her happy. I completely related to the entirety of this book!

Just so we are clear -- I am not unhappy by any means, but I do think, prior to reading this book, I wasn't aware of what made me happy, nor had I given much thought as to how to achieve happiness. I kind of thought happiness would come my way and then I would experience it.

While I am still working on figuring out ways to bring happiness into my own, everyday life, I did learn five valuable lessons from The Happiness Project!

1. The One Minute Rule

If a task can be completed in one minute or less, complete it right away!

For me, this means hanging up my suit when I come home from the office, taking the recycling to the garage, and throwing away the junk mail, instead of leaving it on the counter -- all tasks that can be completed in less than 60 seconds.

This little rule has helped keep my house more organized and clutter free -- which makes both me and Hubby, very happy!

2. Spend Out

Use the stuff you have and don't save things for that "one day," because that day may never come.

For me, this means using the fine china for a frozen pizza dinner, wearing my lacy lingerie for no reason, and writing notes on my fancy stationary just to say hello.

You can't take your stuff with you when you are gone, so use it or lose it!

3. Outer Order Contributes to Inner Calm

Your surroundings (desk, bedroom, kitchen, car, etc). need to be organized in order for you to achieve inner calmness.

For me, this means keeping my desk clean. I am 110% more productive at work if my desk is clear of clutter and I am much more calm when it comes to my job. I am less frazzled, I am nicer, and I am slower to have a major freak out!

It also means keeping my closet organized. I have found that I am much more content with the clothes I own, when they are displayed in an orderly fashion. That is why shopping is so appealing -- the stores are clean, neat, and there aren't clothes and shoes scattered about.

I have started making sure my desk is clean when I leave the office, so I can ensure that I will have a successful and calm morning the next day. I am also making a high effort to keep my closet clean. I did a major closet purge when I completed my Capsule Wardrobe and I am trying so hard to keep it clean!

4. Find Happiness Under Your Own Roof

You don't need to completely alter every facet of your life in order to find happiness -- it is there -- in your everyday life. You just have to look.

For me, this means not just appreciating, but cherishing the every day things and making them feel special and investing my time into the relationships that I already have, and loving the things I already have.

5. Engage in a Modest Splurge

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you something that makes your life easier. Trying to lose weight? Buy yourself a gym membership.

My modest splurge is Blue Apron. I hate to menu plan and cook. I never know what to cook for dinner and I'm not very good at cooking in general. Blue Apron has been the answer to my dilemma. Every week I receive a box with all the ingredients to make three meals. The recipes are delicious and different every week. I can even skip weeks when we are out of town. This service has made my life easier and to me, is worth every penny!

Has anyone else read The Happiness Project? What were your thoughts? If you haven't read it, I would highly recommend it!

Summer Reading List

With all the traveling Hubby and I have been up to, I have rediscovered my love for reading. I love to indulge in some light, easy, chic lit inflight. It makes the time fly by (pun very much intended).

Here are a few that I have read recently...

The Royal We by Heather Crocks and Jessica Morgan -- A cute story about an American girl named Bex who studies abroad at Oxford and falls for the Prince of England. While this book could have been totally cliche, it was really dark and emotional at times, as the story follows the couple's tumultuous relationship over the course of five years and delves into the competitive and at times unhealthy relationship of Bex and her sister. From hiding from the paparazzi, to learning to deal with the Royal Family, this tale made me wonder what things were like for Princess Kate early on.

The Fixer Upper by Mary Kay Andrews -- a young lobbyist gets entangled in a political scandal and must flee Washington DC. Dempsey ends up in a tiny town in Georgia fixing up the old southern mansion her father recently inherited from a long lost uncle and starts to fall for none other than the cute probate lawyer handling the estate! This story explores many dynamic relationships and gives new meaning to the term next of kin.

Ladies' Night by Mary Kay Andrews -- a famous lifestyle blogger finds herself in the throws of a nasty divorce and has to reinvent herself personally and professionally. Forced to attend a divorce recovery group after she drowns her husbands fancy sports car in their backyard pool, Grace finds friendship and love with this group of unlikely characters.

Dare River Series | Book 1 | Country Heaven by Ava Miles -- Bad boy country music star, Rye Crenshaw, hires local diner worker and PhD student, Tory Simmons to come on tour with him to be his personal cook. The two bond over Tory's cooking, while Tory helps Rye reconnect with his family in ways he never thought possible.

I'm currently reading Book 2 in the Dare River Series, The Chocolate Garden. It is so good!

Anybody reading anything fabulous this summer?

A Trip Down Memory Lane

As my birthday gift, Hubby booked us a trip to Santa Barbara -- the most beautiful place on the planet! (Pictures of our trip coming soon!)

My friend Jen treated me to a birthday pedicure, which felt AMAZING! I hadn't had one since June when Kir got married and my poor feet, which I stuff into high heels every day, desperately needed some pampering!

After pedicures and an obscene amount of frozen yogurt, we ventured in to Urban Outfitters on State Street.

For those of you who haven't been to Santa Barbara, State Street is one long stretch of shopping, restaurants, bars, and theaters, with offices and loft apartments above the retail establishments. To me, it is the best place to shop, walk, and people watch!

Urban Outfitters is the weirdest and most eclectic store out there! Most of the time I just look around and think "What? Who would buy this?" And then I recall the 6 inch battery operated light up gnome that graced my book shelf pre-marriage.

A lot of after dinner conversations occurred on the couches for sale at Urban during college night outs. My friends and I would end up in the store, thumbing through the strange collection of books, sitting on the eccentric (ie. overpriced) sofas and chairs.

When Jen and I walked in, we laughed about those nights, wondering why no one ever kicked us out, and we were immediately transported back in time. We hit the sales rack and the table of books. Jen bought an amazing pair of jelly sandals and I treated myself to a an incredible five year journal.

My first entry was on my 27th birthday -- which means my last entry will be the day before i turn 33 (scary!). This is such a fun little notebook! I'm kind of obsessed! I think I may get one for my cousin who will be graduating from high school this spring. I've tried to keep a journal in the past and it never worked out. I think (hope!) this one will be different since writing a sentence or two in the small space provided is much less daunting then staring at the pages of a blank book. I'll let y'all know how this works out for me!

Below are some other crazy reads that you can find at Urban!

Yum! Love Nutella! My go to is Nutella on an English muffin, but I'd be game to really doa anything with it!

My cat definitely needs a collection of paper hats! Doesn't yours?

I read this book in 8th grade and it was so creepy and thrilling! I remember wondering what it would be like to find my face amongst the missing, kidnapped, children.

Pictures to come of my trip soon!
