How to Dress Up For Halloween without Wearing a Costume...

I'm all about a fabulous Halloween costume, but sometimes life doesn't call for a full blown costume. Maybe you're busy this year, or you're not going to any Halloween festivities, or costumes aren't really your thing... Have no fear! Halloween Memories...

We have really fond memories of celebrating Halloween as kids -- from trick-or-treating around our neighborhood, to the annual costume parade at our Elementary School -- we love to dress up and we love to eat candy!

Here we share a few of our favorite Halloween memories...

1. What was your favorite Halloween costume as a kid?

Kir: My favorite costume as a kid was when I dressed up as a flying monkey (it was really for homecoming in High School but it was sweet)!! I wore a black cheerleader type skirt with black tights and a black long sleeve shirt with black wings while I skated around on black roller skates! My mom also made me a little top hat like the monkeys had in Wizard of Oz!

Meg: My favorite costume is also something I wore for homecoming in High School and then again in College. My mom made me a spot on Alice in Wonderland Costume. I felt like a Disney Princess. My favorite Halloween costume is probably 6th or 7th grade when I wore my Mom's prom dress and went as a Prom Queen. 

2. What was your least favorite Halloween costume as a kid?

Kir: We had a Princess Jasmine costume that I wore when I was probably in like 4th grade. It had the little greenish pants with the little bikini type top but my mom had me wear a white turtle neck underneath. I looked so lame!!!!

Meg: I remember the Princess Jasmine costume! I also had to wear the white turtleneck! Ha ha! My least favorite costume has to be the year I was a birthday present. My mom wrapped a big cardboard box in birthday gift wrap and cut out spots for my arms, legs, and head. I had a huge curly ribbon bow for my hair. I remember finding the idea in an American Girl magazine and thinking it was so clever. No one got it -- everyone asked me if I was a box. What third grader wants to explain her Halloween costume?

3. If you could be anything for Halloween this year what would you be?

Kir:  I am going to be a zookeeper along with my husband and our little girl is going to be a zebra!

Meg: I really want to be Cat Woman one year for Halloween. Not this year, but maybe sometime soon. Any excuse for it to be socially acceptable to wear head to toe leather. 

4. What candy were you excited to get trick-or-treating as a kid?

Kir: I loved getting butterfingers! Those are still my favorite candies!!!!

Meg: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups is my all time favorite candy. Yummy!

5. What candy sat in your trick or treat bag until it was finally thrown out when you were a kid?

Kir: I hated tootsie rolls but mom loved them so she usually ate them.

Meg: I hated the tootsie rolls too! Gross! There was also a dentist who lived around the block that passed out toothbrushes. I don't remember being thrilled about the toothbrush. 

6. What are your plans for Halloween this year?

Kir: We are doing trunk or treat with our church! If you don't know what that is you need to seriously go google that right now!!!! Since we are dressing up as zookeepers and we have our little zebra too, we are turning the back of our car into a little zoo with all of Hailey's stuffed animals! (Pictures to come the week after Halloween)!!!!

Meg: We are going to my brother and sister in laws' house, ordering pizza, passing out candy, and watching a scary movie.

Halloween Mantle | Home Decor

Less than a week away until Halloween! Do you have your costume? How about your bowl of candy? I bought a bag of candy -- but -- whoops -- I ate it already! For the record, it was a small bag! 

I finally finished up my Halloween mantle! I wanted to play up my love of Shakespeare tragedies with this Macbeth quote print that I showcased a few weeks ago on my Halloween Subway Art post. I even found a skull which is so Hamlet! I'm a nerd!

Family Costumes

Dressing up is one of my most favorite things to do! I love getting to try and step out of my comfort zone and I feel like that with a "costume" (even a very basic outfit) I feel like a totally different person! I usually wait kinda till the last minute to make costumes however, so here are some quick and cheap costumes you can whip up with some friends or for your family

Here are some super simple costumes for your family (or friends) 

101 Dalmatians

What a simple costumes idea for a family!! The kids just have to wear white "clothes" with black dots all over them, along with some simple ears that can be made from extra material attached to a headband.  

 Family Farm

Kids wear whatever "farm" animal you can make or find a costume with and dad and mom can just wear some boots and flannel. 

*The picture of the large cow lady and dairy farmer is me and my hubby last year (so I was almost 8 months prego)

M&M's

So easy and so cute! Each person wear a different colored shirt along with black leggings or pants and draw/paint on an M on your shirt (can also be a Skittle instead if your into those)

Playing Dress Up With Betsey Johnson

I'll admit... I think Halloween is a really fun holiday! Dressing up, eating tons of candy, scary movies -- what's not to love, right? I'm totally not into decorating my house like a graveyard or having flying witches hanging from the trees outside my apartment, but there is something magical about dressing up in a costume. 

I have a few favorite childhood costumes... 

In 3rd grade my mom and I came up with this great idea that I would be a giant present! My mom cut holes in a box for my head, arms, and legs to stick out of and wrapped the box in birthday wrap. I even wore a giant curly ribbon bow in my hair. Even though most people thought I was a box for Halloween, I still thought my costume was uber clever! It was different and totally unique.

In 8th grade my friend and I dressed up as prom queens and wore our mom's old prom dresses. It was so much fun to wear my mom's dress and a tiara! I also might add that this was the last year my parents let me go trick-or-treating! Lame!

While I won't be dressing up this year, I still find dressing up and adding a little flare to the everyday is important. I am a big Betsey Johnson fan and I believe she allows women to add a touch of whimsy to their wardrobes.
